North England

The non-metropolitan county of Cumbria is based in North West England, and encumbers six districts. As quite a rural location it is home to numerous farms and countryside homes. It’s known for the outstanding natural beauty of the Lake District.

County Durham is located towards the east of the north of England. The mining and farming heritage have built up this county. Its county town is Durham, a cathedral city that, along with the rest of the area, has regenerated into a tourist location.

Lancashire was archaically known as the County Palatine of Lancaster, and is located in the north west of England. It is quite a commercial and industrial region nowadays and has a population of just under 1.5 million.

Greater Manchester metropolitan county is located in the north west and is an exporter of media and digital content, among other things. It’s population is nearly double of that of Lancashire, at a steady 2.7 million. This region encases a mixture of rural and urban areas, including semi-rural and suburbs.

Merseyside is settled in the north west, and took its name from the River Mersey. This poly-centric county encloses a total of five metropolitan districts, but still only has a small population of 1.38 million. Like Manchester, this county also contains rural and urban areas.

As the largest county in the United Kingdom, Yorkshire houses an impressive 5.3 million. This vast county has sometimes been referred to as “God’s Own Country” due to it containing some of the greenest lands in England.
