Surface dressing involves the application of a layer of hot bitumen from a spray tanker, immediately followed by a layer of aggregate chippings. It is carried out annually by Northumberland County Council and local councils across the UK as a means of extending the life of the roads, preventing cracks, and of maintaining safety, and is also ideal for private roads, car parks, farm tracks and driveways.

Environmental considerations

Surface dressing uses far less aggregates, which have to be quarried from finite resources, compared with full hot asphalt resurfacing.
